My new favorite

We have always enjoyed German pancakes (or whatever you call them). I usually make them in two big glass pans in hopes that the middle will cook before the bottom and edges are burnt. I'm often disappointed. I saw these on the internet and decided we'd try them.

 

They turned out perfect! I get 24 muffins out of one recipe so I had to make 2 recipes to get 48 muffins... and we had some left over. The wells were perfect for whatever you want to fill them with - although they aren't necessary because you're going to cut them up and eat them. They weren't burnt at all and it took only 11 minutes to bake them! You can't get any better than that!

I will say that the new muffin pan (the one on the left) was WAY better than mine. They didn't stick at all and they were cooked perfectly. I had to empty the pans out to fill them again with the second batch and needed to spray my pan again but the new one was awesome. Anyway, just thought I'd share!

Didn't quite work.

Art class strikes again. This time Kemiah was supposed to melt crayons to make "new" crayons. I wasn't sure I wanted to use a muffin pan (although I should have), so we used metal cookie cutter shapes that I use for crafting. The little girls filled them with crayons of all different colors and then we put them in the oven. Unfortunately, the melted crayons just oozed under the metal shapes and made a mess on the foil. I was able to pour the liquid wax into a popsicle mold to make one ugly crayon. The rest I left on the foil and it dried. I could really make some money selling this new form of art on eBay! Would you buy it?

 

We might try it again and use the bad muffin pan I have (it burns everything I try to cook in it) and see if we can make some pretty colors. Then again, maybe I could just melt them in the microwave in the plastic popsicle molds that I have. Then again, maybe we can call it good.

Still Learning

We all learned some things this morning...

1. if it is below zero outside, you should probably wear appropriate clothing: gloves, hats, scarves, boots, coats.
2. if it is below zero outside, make sure you start your car 15 minutes before you have to leave so that it can start blowing warm air before the kids go out to the car.
3. if it is below zero outside, you should probably call the library before you head over for story time, to make sure they are open and hosting story time today.
4. if it is below zero outside, maybe you should stay bundled up inside and enjoy a warm cup of hot chocolate while the kids finish school so you can all play a game together in the afternoon.

One out of four isn't too bad. Can you guess which one I actually did before we had to "learn" the lesson?

Shedding light...

Made brownies with Marissa today. As I opened the egg carton (of store bought eggs!) she said, "How did they get them so white?" I guess that goes to show you we have always had chickens that lay brown eggs, so that is all she has ever seen. Oh, and the main reason she wanted to help with brownies was the same reason I wanted to help when I was a kid (or make them now that I'm an adult)... she wanted to lick the beater.

Sunday Activities

We enjoyed going to Church today - after having it cancelled last week. Before we had lunner, people were involved in different activities. Kemiah and Domonique played several different games together.

Emily and Marissa enjoyed reading the comic pages that Grandma and Grandpa Nichols have started to give us every week.

Ben and Xiomara enjoyed playing the new Monopoly game that Xiomara got for Christmas with their Dad.

I took a break from nursing the baby to take pictures. I figured you didn't want a picture of that so it's not included. I hope you had a wonderful Sabbath day with your family!

Late Christmas Gift

We had a notice in our mailbox the day after Christmas that the mailman had tried to deliver a package the day before Christmas. It must have come while I was out shopping and Kevin and the kids were in the basement stacking wood. Bummer. So Kevin picked it up on Friday and we were able to give Kemiah her last present. She was so excited!

We all enjoy these books - a clever pig out smarts the predators! Her father's nickname for her is pig so she must be super clever!

Prettiest pinch pot

We made some clay for the kid's school art class. They all made coil pots and pinch pots. I was totally impressed with Marissa's work.

Missing Piece

Kemiah and Domonique were playing a game, Don't Break the Ice. They had just set up the board again, but couldn't find the polar bear to set on top. We looked, and looked, assuming Harmonie had walked off with it and set it down some where. After several minutes of searching, I finally asked Harmonie, "Where did you put the polar bear?" To my surprise she tugged at her pants. Not really sure what she was doing I asked, Did you put the bear in your pants?" She sat down and pulled on her pants. Sure enough, the polar bear was in her pant leg, unable to fall out because she was wearing sweatpants. Silly girl. We were glad to have the polar bear back.
